san antonio and austin, our trip down south: part 1

my husband has a new blog. his post up today is about how it makes him mad when people compare their pets to children. you can read it here. good stuff.
The last weekend in March, Ben and I booked 2 nights in San Antonio and headed down to south Texas for some alone time. Taking a trip to San Antonio was goal #2 on my list for this year.

This was the first overnight trip that I had taken away from Isaac and it was the first time we left him overnight with someone other than either of us.

My mom flew in on Thursday afternoon to babysit for the weekend. Friday afternoon, when the car was loaded up, we hit the road. We got to San Antonio at about 7.

When we arrived at our hotel (which I picked very specifically based on location, ammenities and price) we were told that our room had been floaded and we would be staying down the street. This hotel would comp us one night's stay and so we basically got 2 nights for $100. And, the hotel they put us in turned out to be just fine. I think there weren't very many rooms left, so we got the suite with a jacuzzi tub. Score!

Once we got settled in, it was time to drive down to the Riverwalk for dinner. We were both starving and didn't feel like experimenting or searching very hard, so we decided on the Hard Rock. After dinner we headed back to the hotel, enjoyed a bath in the jacuzzi tub and watched a few episodes of Storage Wars (we don't have cable so when we're out somewhere that does, we go all out. haha)

Saturday morning we got up and headed back over to the Riverwalk. Our hotel was a little over a mile from the area, but we decided to put on our walking shoes and make a day of it. When we vacation, we get a map, pack for the day and walk all over the place. On the way to the main strip area we passed HEB headquarters. Pretty cool right? We were checking it out what looked like an old plantation, when I noticed this plaque outside.

As we walked further down the street, we found a stair way down to part of the Riverwalk and took that into the main area of the city. It was so beautiful! I wish we lived there so I could run along this stretch of the river every morning.

We started our day with breakfast and coffee at Starbucks. Then we headed over to the Alamo.

My husband, the history buff, told me the whole story. I had no idea that Davey Crockett was killed at the Alamo! I guess I didn't really pay that much attention in history class. The highlight of Ben's day was seeing Davey Crockett's actual rifle. He's also a gun-lover.

We had lunch at Casa Rio, which was the first restaurant to open on the Riverwalk.

And then took the boat tour on the river. We learned that 13 people a week fall in (which had been one of our questions the whole time. I mean, there aren't any railings!) and most happen after 2 am. Surprise, surprise.

After that boat ride, we were exhausted. It was hot and there was no shade. So we walked our tired selves back to the hotel to rest and take a dip in the pool. Then we took a trolley back into town for dinner.

We had dinner at an Italian restaurant and then stopped at an Irish Pub for a beer (we're a big fan of pubs).

We took the bus back. Boy do I love public transportation at 10 o'clock at night! Hah. But we made it safe and sound.

The next morning, we packed up, enjoyed our continental breakfast and headed north to Austin.
